Description
Casamento’s Restaurant was established in 1919 by Joe Casamento, an Italian immigrant from the island of Ustica.
It is located at, 4330 Magazine Street, near Napoleon Ave. in the 12th Ward of New Orleans.
It was the Saturday before Mardi Gras and the Krewe of Iris parade had just passed Marengo Street and St. Charles Avenue.
The meal started with dozens of fresh raw oysters and eventually included trout sandwiches served on Casamento’s own pan bread, soft shell crabs, seafood gumbo, and an order of meatballs for lagniappe. The thick, dark chicory coffee was made in an ancient, battered drip coffee maker and served with steamed milk. Twelve more parades would march through the neighborhood before Mardi Gras was over.
